So, last week we discovered a design flaw in our SkyCamOne HATs for Raspberry Pi 4B. The flaw is in the buck converter circuit where we convert the incoming power from PoE or 12 volts in into 5 volts. These 5 volts are used to power your Raspberry and the dew heater for instance, but also go towards the stepper motors and servos.
When powering the combination (Raspberry Pi with the SkyCamOne HAT) by plugging in a USB-C power adapter into your Raspberry Pi 4B, this buck converter would somehow activate reversely and create up to 18 volts within the SkyCamOne HAT. The HAT would hold up to this abuse for a couple of hours but eventually a diode would burn out.
Not how we intended it to work!
So as soon as we found out, we stopped the sales of this HAT and revised the design. A new design, Revision C, is now being produced.
Here’s the good news:
- If you just power your HAT with PoE or 12 volts in, there is no issue at all and everything works great!
- For those of you that have a Revision B HAT in your posession or under way, we are going to send you a new Revision B HAT free of charge!
Yes, you read that right! We are sending you a new HAT for free! We want you to have the best experience with Titan Astro and what is better that having TWO HATs for the price of one!
Thank you once again for sticking with us and for being so understanding! We are delighted to be part of such a great community!
